Connect with Faculty about research
Contacting research faculty doesn鈥檛 have to be scary! You can talk to faculty before/after class, attend office hours, or send an email inquiring about opportunities.
- When you email the research faculty member(s), make sure to express your interest researching with them. Consider your email as the first step to an interview; be sure that your email reflects your best effort. Check out these .
- Schedule a time to meet with the research faculty member. Check out these tips on .
- If it seems like a good fit, ask the research faculty to be your Research Mentor!
Next, you and your Research Mentor will work on answering the following questions:
- How will this experience give you the opportunity to engage in Research?
- What are the objectives of the Research project?
-
How will your Research Mentor guide you through the project?
-
What are the shared expectations about check-ins, communication, and assessment?
-
In what term(s) will you engage in the Research activity?
-
How many hours of Research per week and in total for each term?
with your Research Mentor.
Review your Degree Requirements
- Talk with your Academic Advisor about using Research to fulfill your Experiential Learning Requirement (3 credits).
-
You can use Research to meet the 60 upper-division credit requirement and the 180 total credit requirement.
Decide amount of credits or non-credit
-
You can register for 0 (non-credit) to 16 credits of Research in a given term.
-
1 credit equals 30 hours of work in total.
-
You can earn Research credits in one single term or in multiple consecutive terms.
-
Consider registering for Research as non-credit (OEAS 003) at no cost! This will make your Research experience transcript visible. This is also a great option if you choose to do research over multiple terms, but you do not need the subsequent credits to fulfill remaining degree requirements.
-
You can earn Research credit regardless of whether the experience is paid or volunteer.
Consider impact on Financial Aid and Scholarships
-
Does your financial aid or scholarship eligibility require minimum credit registration that Research credits could help meet?
Once you鈥檝e defined the expectations with your Research Mentor and reviewed the above time and cost factors with your Academic Advisor, you are ready to apply!
